Befriending Embodied Movement is a trauma-informed, self-paced introduction to the 5Rhythms® movement practice.
Whether you’re feeling disconnected from your body, overwhelmed by emotion, or unsure how to begin, this course offers a gentle, accessible way in. Through guided movement, somatic awareness, and emotional expression, you’ll learn to process what words can’t touch, and build lasting pathways to presence, resilience, and inner freedom.
This course is a gentle, trauma-informed invitation to come back into your body, exactly as you are. Rather than thinking your way through emotions or pushing them aside, you’ll learn to move, express, and metabolize what’s alive in you—grief, joy, tension, longing, overwhelm.
Whether you’re living with chronic stress or illness, new to movement, or seeking to deepen your existing practice, Befriending Embodied Movement offers a practical and soulful entry into the 5Rhythms®. From breath and micro-movements to full-bodied expression, this is a return to your own rhythm.
Let the body move what is ready to move.

Layah Jane Singer-Wilson is a healing artist—a teacher, dancer, mother, and musician. For 24 years, 5Rhythms® dance has been a central catalyst in her growth, and in 2014, she became a certified teacher of the practice. She is passionate about offering dancers sacred space to experience movement as medicine, and since 2003, she has facilitated expressive movement for all ages, on all kinds of dance floors—classrooms, gyms, offices, schools, Zoom rooms, barns, fields, and studios—including at Toronto's conscious dance hubs, The Move and Ecstatic Dance Toronto.
Layah’s musical offerings are those that rock her heart, move her soul, and make her sweat, whether it’s a funky groove, a soulful melody, or a big thumping beat.
Her 5Rhythms® facilitation is infused with expressive enthusiasm, a fascination with the weave of ritual and improvisational art, and a reverent love of creative practice as both a transformational and political act. She is a certified 5Rhythms® teacher accredited by the 5Rhythms Teachers Association and a member of the International Conscious Movement Teachers Association.
Simona Irwin is a mindfulness teacher, neuroplasticity coach, and facilitator who specializes in supporting individuals struggling with chronic illness, complex fear states, and emotional overwhelm. She brings her expertise to her online community space and monthly mindfulness and constellation circles in Toronto, creating warm, inclusive containers where somatic awareness, nature connection, and authentic belonging intersect.
Through mindfulness, movement, parts work, and systemic constellations, Simona's work fosters embodied resilience and relational repair. Her approach centers on reciprocity, supporting each person’s path toward wholeness while honoring the larger ecosystems—human and more-than-human—we belong to. Simona is a devoted student of 5Rhythms® and the mystery of the big dance.
Start where you are. Move at your own pace. Lifetime Access.
Moving through the Rhythms helps emotions move through you. Rather than staying stuck in anxiety, grief, or overwhelm, 5Rhythms supports the body in processing and releasing what’s ready to shift.
Each Rhythm reveals different aspects of your inner world. Through movement, you learn to listen to your body’s cues, patterns, and needs: often before the mind can make sense of them.
Physically and emotionally, the practice helps unstick what feels frozen or rigid. You build the ability to move with change, stay grounded in uncertainty, and soften into what’s alive in the moment.
The rhythmic structure of the practice naturally mirrors cycles of activation and rest. Over time, this builds greater capacity to respond rather than react, and to find a steadier baseline in everyday life.
Whether practiced alone or in community, 5Rhythms invites connection: with your body, with others, a lineage and with something greater. It’s a reminder that we are not separate from life, but part of its ongoing dance.
5Rhythms offers a space to reconnect with the simple joy of being in a body. It invites movement that is expressive, freeing, and alive: not for performance, but for presence. The practice can awaken playfulness, creativity, and a sense of pleasure that helps you feel more fully embodied, grounded, and at home in yourself.
This course meets you exactly where you are. Nothing to change, fix, or prepare for.
Whether you're 5Rhythms-curious and exploring your first steps, living with pain or fatigue, navigating limited mobility, sensitivities, or feeling anxious or shy about beginning, movement is possible.
From imagined movement to full-body expression, all forms are welcome here.
Whether you're wanting to build a home practice, or preparing to join an online or in-person class, this course offers multiple ways in.
Start in your own space, at your own pace, creating a foundation that supports your practice, your way.
There’s no one right way to begin, only a willingness to meet yourself as you are.
"I’ve really enjoyed this course. The videos are clear, and Layah and Simona are very calming. The workbook is one of my favorite parts. It’s easy to follow and thoughtfully written, with little touches that made me feel really supported."
"I wasn’t sure if this would work for me because I can only move from bed or a chair right now. But from the very first session, I began to cry. I felt like it was actually made with people like me in mind. It felt good to be included and to move in ways that were totally doable for my body."
"I’ve wanted to try 5Rhythms for a long time, but going to a class felt intimidating. This course was a great way to ease in. I could go at my own pace and start to understand the rhythms without pressure. It’s helped me feel more confident and curious about exploring it further."
Start where you are. Move at your own pace.

We’ve walked this path ourselves and know how powerful it can be to be met exactly where you are. This course is a way in, a way back to your breath, your body, and your own unique rhythm.
We hope to see you soon!

Not at all. This course is designed for people of all experience levels, including those who have never danced before. 5Rhythms® is not about choreography or learning steps, it’s about moving in a way that feels true for you. There is no right or wrong way to move here.
You are welcome exactly as you are. The course includes adaptations for all energy levels and mobility needs, including practices you can do from bed or a chair, or even through imagined movement. Small, subtle shifts are just as meaningful as larger expressions. You get to choose what feels supportive for your body.
This course was created with sensory sensitivity in mind. The pacing is gentle, and you can control your own environment, adjust the volume, pause as needed, and choose the lighting that feels best. You are always encouraged to go at your own pace and make the practice your own.
That’s completely okay. Many people feel uncertain at first. This course is meant to be a soft landing: a welcoming space to begin or return to movement with care. You don’t need to be confident to start, just curious. You can begin in stillness, with breath or imagination, and build from there.
The course is self-paced, so you can go as slowly or quickly as you like. Some people choose to explore one module per week, while others move more gradually. Each module includes a video lesson, optional journal prompts, and guided practices you can return to again and again. Even just a few minutes of movement can be meaningful. You get to shape the rhythm that works for you.
This course is designed to support both a strong beginning and ongoing practice. You’ll have continued access to all the recordings, guided sessions, and workbook materials, allowing you to return to them anytime. You’re also invited to stay connected through our active community forum and occasional pop-up live Zoom classes. When you feel ready, you can explore joining us online or find a 5Rhythms® teacher in your area and try an in-person class. There’s no endpoint, only the ongoing invitation to keep moving with what’s here.
